About the Rarotonga BESS

A battery energy storage system (BESS) installed at the Te Mana Ra Solar PV facility, on the island of Rarotonga and connected to the electricity grid.

The BESS provides increased flexibility for the electricity utility Te Aponga Uira (TAU) to manage the output of increasing capacity of renewable generation in the grid.

The BESS is installed at the existing solar farm at the airport in a very small footprint. Due to the footprint restrictions, MPower's solution maximised the kWh output per square meter to minimise land utilisation and enable further
battery capacity installation in the future.

The BESS includes:
• A fully integrated, modular system, suitable for extended service in local conditions
• Usable storage capacity of 5.6MWh
• Capability to charge and discharge at 1 MW
• High voltage (11 kV) electrical connection to the grid
